Experts in aerial filming in Sydney share CASA's restrictions for flying your drone near an airport

Here at Airborne Studio, we know that drone videography in Sydney is here to stay and as drone specialists we understand the importance of drone safety, this includes keeping a safe distance from airports.

Back on 21st December, Gatwick Airport, the UK’s second largest airport, was shut down due to drone sightings in the area.

The problem is that may people who fly drones, do not consider their drone an aircraft, nor do they consider themselves or anyone else who flies a drone a "pilot". Our experts in aerial filming in Sydney say that many see their drone as just a toy, not taking safety seriously. Drones not only have the potential to damage a plane, they put passengers in danger!

If your drone weighs more than 100g, you must keep at least 5.5km away from controlled aerodromes. Flying within 5.5km of a non-controlled aerodrome or helicopter landing site (HLS) is possible, but only if no manned aircraft are operating to or from the aerodrome. If you become aware of manned aircraft operating to or from the aerodrome/HLS, you must manoeuvre away from the aircraft and land as soon as safely possible.

As commercial drone operators we are sticklers for the rules and no matter the potential for a magnificent aerial shot, we always put the safety and privacy of others first!
